The emerald waters of the Kiso River flow between pale granite rocks. In Agematsu, Nagano Prefecture, Nezame no Toko is a scenic stop on the Kiso route, known for the landscape created by rock and water.
Its angular formations resemble enormous stacked boxes, with the river running through the mountain valley. A local legend connects this landscape with Urashima Taro, the hero of a Japanese folktale. Choose a viewpoint or walking route that suits the time you have.
A Granite Landscape Shaped by the Kiso River
The distinctive feature of Nezame no Toko is its series of angular rock formations. Over a long period, the Kiso River eroded the granite bedrock, revealing shapes influenced by the way the rock fractures.
Designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 1923, the site is now part of Chuo Alps Quasi-National Park. It was also admired by travelers on the Nakasendo and is counted among the Eight Views of Kiso.
Look beyond the rocks to take in the river and surrounding hills. The contrast between pale stone and green water is central to the landscape’s appeal.
The Legend of Urashima Taro
According to local legend, Urashima Taro arrived here during his travels after returning from the Dragon Palace. He was so taken with the scenery that he made his home here.
The connection between a sea-based folktale and this mountain valley adds another layer to a visit. Rinsenji Temple, overlooking Nezame no Toko, enshrines a figure of Benzaiten associated with the legend.
Enjoy a View from Above or Take a Walk
For a Short Visit: The View from Rinsenji Temple
The temple grounds offer a view over Nezame no Toko. This is an option for seeing the arrangement of the river and rocks from above or making a stop while traveling through Kiso. An admission fee applies; the tourism association lists it as 200 yen.
With More Time: Include the Art Park
The tourism association suggests allowing at least an hour for a visit that includes walking down closer to the rocks. The route from the temple has steep sections, while a separate route through woodland starts from the municipal parking area. Walking distances and slopes vary by entrance.
Nezame no Toko Art Park features a sundial and sculptures exploring the theme of time, inspired by the Urashima legend. Look for these works as well as the natural rock formations during your walk.
Seasonal Colors Around the Rocks
Cherry blossoms appear nearby in spring, while the hills across the river change color in autumn. The rocks remain, but the changing backdrop gives the scene a different character.
The forest behind the site includes Kiso hinoki cypress, sawara cypress and northern Japanese hemlock. Take in the rocks, water and woodland together to appreciate the wider landscape.
