Architectural Highlights of Matsushiro Castle

Matsushiro Castle is not a large castle with a surviving keep. Its main attractions are the defensive layout, reconstructed gates, stone walls, earthworks and moats.

Walking around the grounds reveals how the castle used the nearby Chikuma River and the surrounding terrain as part of its defensive system.

Taikomon Gate

Taikomon was the main entrance to the inner bailey. The present gate was reconstructed based on archaeological surveys and historical documents.

Its massive wooden structure, white walls and surrounding stonework create one of the most impressive views at Matsushiro Castle Ruins.

When passing through the gate, look closely at the width of the entrance and the enclosed space around it. These features helped defenders control the movement of anyone entering the castle.

Kita-Akazumon Gate

Kita-Akazumon stands on the northern side of the inner bailey. It was designed to restrict direct access and strengthen the castle’s northern defenses.

The gate, wooden bridge and moat form a particularly photogenic composition and help visitors understand how the entrance was protected.

Former Site of the Inui Turret

The northwest corner of the inner bailey contains the former site of the Inui Turret.

Although the turret itself no longer remains, the elevated stone foundation offers a good view over the castle grounds and the surrounding landscape.

Standing here makes it easier to understand the position of the inner bailey and the relationship between the castle, the river and the mountains.

Stone Walls Built with Natural Stones

The stone walls of Matsushiro Castle were constructed using locally sourced stone, including stones from the surrounding area and Mount Minakami.

Many sections feature a technique known as nozurazumi, in which stones are stacked while retaining much of their natural shape.

Because the stones vary in size and shape, the walls have a rugged and powerful appearance when viewed up close.

In addition to the gates, pay attention to the surfaces and corners of the stone walls. Differences in stone placement reveal the skill and practical knowledge of the builders.

Matsushiro Castle Through the Seasons

Spring|Cherry Blossoms and Castle Gates

Matsushiro Castle Ruins are one of the best-known cherry blossom locations in the Matsushiro area.

The blossoms usually reach their peak around mid-April, creating views of cherry trees alongside the gates, stone walls and moats.

The flowering period varies each year depending on the temperature. Check the latest information from the local tourism authorities before visiting.

Summer|Deep Greenery and Powerful Stone Walls

During summer, the trees and lawns inside the castle grounds become vividly green.

The contrast between the greenery, white walls and stonework makes the castle’s structure easy to appreciate. However, shaded areas are limited, so bring water and protection from the sun.

Autumn|Fall Colors in the Castle Town

In autumn, the trees around the castle change color and the historic atmosphere of Matsushiro becomes even more pronounced.

Combine the castle ruins with the garden of the Sanada Residence and nearby samurai houses for a relaxed autumn walk through the town.

Winter|A Quiet Castle Landscape

Winter is generally quieter, allowing visitors to explore the site in a calm atmosphere.

After snowfall, the white ground, dark wooden structures and stone walls create a striking landscape. Paths and wooden bridges may become icy, so wear shoes with good traction.

Different Views During the Day and at Night

During the daytime, visitors can clearly see the mountains, lawns, stone walls, gates and the overall layout of the castle.

For a first visit, daytime is recommended because the castle’s structure is easier to understand.

At night, illuminated gates, stone walls and moats create a quiet and atmospheric scene.

The inner bailey has designated opening hours. Do not enter closed areas at night, and view the illuminated structures only from places that remain open to the public.
